America is the land of free press indeed. You can find many American newspapers that are spread among all states, not to mention all other countries! Nevertheless, when you visit a specific region in the United States, it will be more intimate to read some of the local publications whether they are daily or weekly newspapers or magazines covering the local issues. Here is a bit about what you can read in San Diego, that is not all though but they are just some options to accompany your morning coffee! Beach & Bay Press is a newspaper in San Diego, covering general news. It is published once a week (on Thursday particularly). It spreads around 17,591 copies each weak. Coast News is another weekly newspaper that is also covering general news, but it is published on Friday and it concentrates more on local news and events in the Encinitas/North San Diego area. It spreads more copies somehow (29,700 copies). Peninsula Beacon is published once a week on Thursday with a circulation of 20,000 copies. San Diego Metro Weekly is a newspaper that was first published in January 2002. San Diego Metro weekly covers local news, A&E, sports, health, home and life style. It also covers regional, national and global news and politics of interest to the San Diego area reader.

The Joods Historisch Museum in Amsterdam is dedicated to give a representation of Jewish life, in particular of the Dutch Jews uses. Housed in a building that formerly was a Temple, the Joods Historisch was opened in 1932 but was closed soon after, because of the Nazis occupation of Nederland and lost a big part of its collection. After the II World War only a small part of the objects of the Museum were recovered but, nonetheless, the Museum was reopened in 1955. Year after year the collection grew more and more and today it costs of more than ten thousands articles that are divided into two permanent exhibitions and one that changes on a regular time basis. Many of the ceremonial objects of the Joods Historisch Museum are displayed in the places were they were used when the building was still used as a Synagogue. The Joods Historisch Museum is open all year round except for the Jewish New Year Day and Yom Kippur.

It was on August 24th, 79 A.C., when the volcano Vesuvio woke up after a long sleep to destroy everything at its feet. Ercolano was buried under a huge load of mud and lava thick up to 25 meters. It is thanks to the mud that everything, clothes, food, pottery and wooden artifacts, remained practically unchanged, practically petrified. Over the centuries the memory of Ercolano town faded away. It was only in 1709 that the prince of Elboef, while having a well dug in one of his villas, found the structure of the Theatre of Ercolano. Greater excavations started in 1738 thanks to King Carlo di Borbone. The most astonishing founding is for sure the imposing “Villa dei Papiri“, where a papyrus library with over 1800 philosophical texts
was found (now the texts are at Naples’ National Library). The excavations of houses and public buildings started only in 1927. It was in Herculaneum (today Ercolano) that rich Romans spent their holidays and among their beautiful villas today we might visit the sumptuous “House of the Deer” (Casa dei Cervi) where statues of deer assaulted by dogs were found and the house with the mosaic atrium (Casa dell’Atrio a Mosaico), with its beautiful white and black mosaic floor or still the 2-floors house of Argo (Casa di Argo) with its garden surrounded by a colonnaded portico. The Palestra (gym) is a remarkable construction, with an open air swimming pool in the centre of which a bronze fountain, representing a hydra, proudly stands.
After a full day visit enjoy local wine: Falanghina or Lacryma Christi.

This we can read in Homer’s Odyssey: it is the Amalfi coast, where the mermaids sng the joy of oblivion.

One of the symbols of this coast is Amalfi itself, with its houses ckinging to the rocks, its narrow roads in a framework of blind alleys and arches, of ancient towers guarding the lttle town.

Founded by the Romans sometime around IV Century A.D., Amalfi enjoyed great fame in the Middle ages thanks to the marin republics.

Much later its name was connected to Flavio Gioia’s compass and to the ‘Tavole Amalfitane’, the first code of marine law.

Today it is still a very special place, where cultural and environmental interests are combined: the Cathedral and Belfry, various churches and cloisters, the Castle, the Emerald Grotto….

If you have the chance, do not miss on Holy Thursday the ‘Procession of battenti’ and on Good Friday the ‘Procession of the Dead Christ’.

A vey good reason to spend yor Easter holiday on the Amalfi coast…and its jeweks: Maiori, Minori, Ravello, Positano, Praiano, Vietri sul Mare and many more
